Black business spotlight: Shan’s Hands Creations
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Known as the dope ear decorator, Shaundra Hinson is on a mission to help every woman make a statement.
Hinson is the owner of Shan’s Hands Creations and creates a variety of things like rings, keychains, bookmarks and her well-known clay earrings.
“I’ve always loved earrings, even from a little girl, and so I just started calling them ear decorations and I’m a dope ear decoration designer,” Hinson said.
Her business was birthed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
“I saw a young lady online who was visually impaired, and she was selling polymer clay earrings,” Hinson said. “I ordered from her and when I got them I was like I bet I can do this.”
Hinson now creates a variety of earrings that feature different shapes, colors and jewels.
“You have different ends of the spectrum,” Hinson said. “You have your elegance, you have your everyday fun, you even have your chickens with boots for all my poultry science majors, even Beyoncé Texas.”
In addition, the entrepreneur uses her business to honor Black history and culture with earrings displaying things like Black women with afros and African colors.
“I love creating parts of my history,” Hinson said. “Growing up as a brown skin girl and not really seeing things that cater to me growing up and so when I create my pieces, I like to just show culture and texture and colors and different shapes and things like that.”
Hinson wants her pieces to remind women they’re enough.
“My main goal is if you were to see me at any markets or anything, I have on my booth ‘you are enough,’” Hinson said. “That is like the main thing I want women to feel like they are enough. I want them to feel like they are the statement.”
As a Black entrepreneur, Hinson is proud to offer something different and follow in the footsteps of women in her family.
“I come from a history of women in small business,” Hinson said. “My grandmother being the first small business owner in her East Texas town and my mother being a small business owner running a daycare growing up, it just, kind of, runs in my blood.”
Hinson’s studio is inside Shades Atelier at 3001 Wildflower Drive in Suite 811 in Bryan.
