Army veteran leads fourth annual Memorial Day fun run

NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) – An army veteran in Navasota led his fourth annual Memorial Day fun run Monday to raise awareness for the sacrifices made by military members.

Mitch Kroll served in the army in the 1980s. He was stationed in Germany as a member of the Second Armored Division in the Forward 134th Infantry.

Now each Memorial Day, he puts on his old uniform and takes to the streets, running to the VFW in remembrance of fallen military members.

Kroll said he plans to continue this tradition for as long as he can.

”This is my actual uniform I wore in 1981. I still fit it! So I wear it proudly and it’s just, it helps me. I just want to bring up that this is a military nation, you know the sacrifices that the military gives,” he said.

He started doing this during the pandemic, but due to COVID restrictions, only one other person joined him. It’s since spread through word of mouth, and others have joined him on foot, bike, car and four-wheeler as he runs.

Others watch from the sidelines, parade-style.
