Anointed Abilities celebrating major growth heading into second year
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A local nonprofit is celebrating several milestones going into its 2nd anniversary.
Anointed Abilities was founded in March 2022 as a resource for special needs and disenfranchised youth. The founder, Amber Evans, hosted weekly gatherings, a.k.a social clubs, which allowed the youth to enjoy recreational activities, mentorship and a warm meal.
“It’s about creating a safe space,” Evans said. “I think parents feel comfortable leaving their kids places where they know that someone gets it.”
During that time, Evans was excited about growing that portion of the organization but found herself impacting the community in more ways.
“If you tell me where there’s a need, I’m going to figure out a way to fill it,” Evans said. “I’m really determined to fill it.”
Evans did that in several ways in 2023. The organization sponsored 15 kids with special needs to go to summer camp, provided 25 students with school supplies and clothing, distributed 30 toiletry bags and blankets, offered 40 families bill assistance, supplied 100 families with meals and gifted 25 kids with Christmas presents.
The founder credits the community’s support for making it all happen.
”I always say there are a million people who have a vision,” Evans said. “Everyone, I think, has a vision, but when you’re able to bring it to fruition because people believe in you, it’s a feeling that you cannot even describe. It really just makes you feel blessed.”
That support has allowed Evans to have big goals for the organization in 2024. Some include serving more families and providing sensory-friendly events and life-skills opportunities to special needs individuals.
Evans said she plans to start activities in March with high school-aged youth and up.
Although this is all exciting to the Anointed Abilities founder, she said the growth is still hard to believe.
“I’m just a mom, but for so many other people, I am the person who’s bridging the gap or I am a vessel for them that God is using and so I say keep using me God,” Evans said. “You’ve got a bigger plan.”
