An albino raccoon was found in a College Station dumpster

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – An albino raccoon was spotted this week in a College Station dumpster.

Gabriel Heritage, over at College Station Nissan, went to take out the trash when he found the albino raccoon, along with four typical-looking raccoons, in the dumpster.

“Not something you see every day,” Heritage said.

He couldn’t believe his eyes and didn’t think anyone else would either.

“First thing I thought to do was get some pictures because I knew that people wouldn’t believe me if I just told them I saw an albino raccoon,” Heritage said.

Heritage didn’t expect his discovery to get this much attention. The story has shown up in newspapers and newscasts from Houston, Austin and Dallas.

“I just thought that it might be a little buzz in the neighborhood, but definitely didn’t expect the reactions from all over the state,” Heritage said.

The Director of Paws and Claws Wildlife Rehabilitation, Krista Bligh, says albino raccoons are rare.

“They are a gigantic beacon for predators. And a lot of the times they struggle with their eyesight; they are often deaf, which means they’re not responding to their mother’s cues, such as to follow them what they eat,” Bligh said.

With his rare find, Heritage did what he saw as the right thing to do. Set the little guys free.

“I’m just glad that we got those raccoons out of there and that they’re back home where they should be where they belong,” Heritage said.

While it’s not every day you can see an albino raccoon in the wild, you can see some at the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas.
