A&M freshmen on move-in day: ‘It’s a lot of hot and sweaty work and a little hectic but we’re having fun’

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – This weekend marks a new journey for thousands of new Texas A&M students as they move into their college dorm.

Aggie move-in will take place Thursday through Sunday which means busier roads, packed restaurants, and stores.

Twin brothers Benjamin and Nathan Williams are incoming freshmen at Texas A&M University and moved into Walton Hall on campus.

“It’s a lot of hot and sweaty work and a little hectic but we’re having fun,” said Benjamin.

“Lots of twists we didn’t know we would be on the fourth floor, we thought we would be on the 1st, but we are making the most of it,” said Nathan.

The twins said their move-in day has been hot but that hasn’t stopped their excitement for this new chapter.

“I’m looking forward to making new friends, going to most of all the football games,” said Nathan.

“I’m looking forward to joining a lot of FLOs, getting involved in a lot of organizations is something I’ve been looking forward to for a while,” said Benjamin.

Dr. Carol Binzer, the Director of Administrative & Support Services for Texas A&M University Residence Life, said about 11,000 college students are expected to move in through the weekend.

Binzer advises everyone to be aware of the roadways as students get familiar with finding their way around town.

“People are trying to figure out their way around so there’s a lot of ‘I’m in the left lane but I need to be in the right lane’ and instead of going to the next intersection and making a turnaround, they try to veer,” said Binzer.

The influx of people in Aggieland will be a big boost for local businesses as they rely on the Texas A&M student population to keep their doors open.

Jeremiah Cook with Visit College Station said several businesses in College Station renovate over the summer and make sure they’re open and ready for students when the fall semester starts.

And despite lines at restaurants and longer commutes, Cook says the students bring an energy to Aggieland, and it’s palpable.

“The exciting thing is that we get the vibrancy back. Yes, the restaurant may be a little bit more full. Yes, when you go shopping on Saturday there may be more people inside there, but there’s also an energy that’s really hard to explain but it’s that Aggieland energy that people have come to love in this area,” said Cook.

Another big weekend for businesses is coming soon when Aggie Football kicks off their first home game against Notre Dame on August 31st, bringing more people to our area.
