Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach takes first step in establishing maternal housing program
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – In early July Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach closed on the sale of a former fraternity house to convert it into maternal housing and a resource center.
The empty house will soon become a home to the nonprofit’s housing initiative, providing pregnant and postpartum women in need with a safe space while they work to establish a secure future for themselves and their children.
According to executive director Melany Wolfe, many of the women Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach serve are in unstable or potentially unsafe situations. These women, Wolfe said, are often in ‘crisis mode,’ struggling to meet their basic needs while also facing an unplanned pregnancy.
“They maybe haven’t even thought about education or their dreams and goals because it was never an option, because their basic needs weren’t even taken care of,” Wolfe emphasized.
Through the doors of the former fraternity house, stability and opportunity await for mother and baby.
“They’re going to learn job skills, have meals provided for them, on site counseling, childcare services,” listed Wolfe.
The first step is converting the empty house into a secure and family-friendly space; an estimated $1 million renovation.
For Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach, it’s about carrying on its mission in a way that allows families to leave with long-term results.
“Our support doesn’t end at the delivery of the child, which we really want them to continue having parenting support and having those life skills support,” communications director Cari LaCroix said.
According to Wolfe, having basic needs met eliminates roadblocks in pursuing higher education or workforce experience for mothers.
”As women live here, they are going to have the opportunity to have education, counseling services, on-site childcare for their little ones. So, while they work and go to school, they have someone to take care of their babies,” added Wolfe.
The first clients are set to be welcomed into the home in summer of 2025, after the renovations are complete.
