Shop tax free this weekend

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The 25th year of Texas’ oldest sales tax holiday, also known as tax-free weekend, has begun.

Friday through Sunday, August 11 at midnight, sales tax will be removed on items like school supplies, backpacks, and most shoes and clothes for one hundred dollars or less. This saves shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

However, sales tax will not be deducted from specialized clothing or footwear designed for athletics, such as cleats or baseball gloves.

According to Kevin Lyons with the Texas Comptroller’s office, Texans are expected to save $143,000,000 this weekend.

“We don’t have many retailers that accidentally charge tax. However, if they do, come to our website,” Lyons said. “Again, it’s comptroller.texas.gov, fill out a form, save your receipt, and send the form and the receipt to us, and we will refund your taxes.”

Qualifying items can be purchased tax-free from any Texas store or online from a Texas-based retailer.
