Woman accused of fatal shooting in Bryan now charged with murder, bond increased
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The woman arrested for the shooting death of Keianna Hines Monday night in Bryan remains in jail with an increased bond linked to another crime and a new charge of murder.
The new charge of murder was added on Thursday and comes with an additional $250,000 bond.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by police, Dequajna Johnson, 22, was the passenger in a car when she pulled out a gun and fired a fatal gunshot at Hines, who approached the vehicle while it was parked on Dansby Street.
Investigators said in their report that Johnson was in the area Monday evening to see her ex-boyfriend, who is also Hines’s ex-boyfriend, and the two had a history of disputes over their relationship with the same man.
Multiple witnesses told police when Hines approached the car, it was Johnson who pulled out a gun and shot Hines once in the chest. Johnson told police that Hines approached the car while “yelling aggressively at everyone in the car” and then opened the passenger door. She told police she was unaware that the gun was loaded and “she only wanted to make Keianna back up so that she could shut the car door.”
The 22-year-old Hines was taken to a hospital where she later passed away.
Johnson left the crime scene Monday night but turned herself in to police on Wednesday afternoon.
She was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and her bond was originally set at $200,000. The murder charge was added sometime on Thursday, according to the DA’s office.
An additional $100,000 bond increase followed a request by the District Attorney’s office for a separate case in 2023 in which Johnson was also charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. In that case, Johnson threatened to shoot a man in June 2023 during an incident at an apartment complex pool in College Station.
A GoFundMe has been set up for family members who have burial-related expenses for Hines.
