Cleanup efforts at College Station’s burnt down Krispy Kreme move forward
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – For nearly three months the charred remains of the Krispy Kreme on Harvey Road has sat virtually untouched, raising complaints from neighboring businesses.
However, the question of who’s responsible for cleaning it up finally has an answer.
“It seems like the owner, the insurance company, and the property management company are going to be responsible for cleanup,” Stuart Marrs with College Station Fire Department (CSFD) said.
Fire marshals turned the property back over to management and insurance on May 18, five days after the fire.
Cleanup isn’t just about getting rid of debris, it has to happen within a reasonable timeline and be in compliance with city code enforcement.
“It’s a nuisance violation,” explained Debbie Eller, director of community services for the city. “So, it’s an accumulation. So, they need to clean up all of the remaining building that’s still standing, but then also the rubbish that’s out there.”
Code Enforcement oversees the process to make sure violations are addressed and the cleanup is handled properly.
“We’ll get in touch with the property owner, make sure that they understand the time frames that they need to work within and what they need to do to have a complete project that’s in compliance,” Eller outlined.
The cleanup process, though, isn’t fast. It takes time for the property owners and insurance to hear bids from contractors and establish time frames for completion. Eller estimated it would take around a month.
“30 days from the time that we started working the code violation,” added Eller. “It could be much sooner than that because the property owner has been working on it.”
College Station Code Enforcement was notified of their involvement last Friday.
