Focus at Four: 4 seats on College Station City Council up for grabs, how to file
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The candidate filing period for those hoping to join College Station’s City Council begins Saturday. Places 3, 4, 5, and 6 are up for election on November 5.
Potential candidates can pick up an application packet at the City Secretary’s Office at College Station City Hall – 1101 Texas Avenue.
“To actually file for candidacy we want a campaign treasure re-report on file and an application,” said Deputy City Secretary Ian Whittenton. “Once you turn in the application we have five days to certify that.”
City Council meetings are bi-weekly and usually last up to eight hours, though they can run longer or shorter. Whittenton said being a city councilmember is time consuming.
“A councilmember devotes a lot of long hours fulfilling their responsibilities, and they’re not paid or compensated for that,” Whittenton warned.
Among the reasons people do file for office, Whittenton added, is the opportunity to serve their community and bring about change.
The City of College Station’s website states to run, candidates must be at least 18 years old, a US citizen, a qualified Texas voter, and a College Station resident for at least one year.
The filing period ends at 5 p.m. on August 19.
