From the Ground Up: Fostering a love for agriculture

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – An educational garden aimed at teaching children the importance of agriculture has been a popular spot for young families in the Brazos Valley for nearly a decade.

Megan Moon, a mother of two, has been bringing her children to the Little River Basin Master Gardener Association in Milam County, in hopes of giving them a glimpse into what her upbringing was like. She says this hands-on learning experience has helped her kids to develop a positive relationship with agriculture.

“I grew up with chickens and turkeys and so for them to at least see other types of animals is so important so that they can see where things come from and where their food is actually coming from,” Moon said.

The siblings particularly enjoy playing with chickens, collecting eggs, and picking fresh vegetables. Moon says they cannot wait to tell their friends about everything they learned after a trip to the garden.

The gardens have even prompted Moon’s children to join her in the kitchen to help prepare meals, and they are more excited now than ever before about what they’re eating.

The Moon family does not have the space to grow a garden or raise animals, so they are very appreciative of opportunities like this one. Her children have gained a new respect and understanding for agriculture and the process of making a meal from the ground up.

Megan hopes that her children will take this experience and continue to implement it into their own lives in the future.

“The fact that we get to come out here and still teach them and they get to experience those things is important to me so that they can grow and do those things on their own at some point,” said Moon.
