College Station teen competing in disc golf world championship
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – An A&M Consolidated High School student will showcase his disc golf skills in a big competition this week.
Will Ferris will compete in the Professional Disc Golf Association’s Junior Disc Golf World Championship in Tulsa starting Tuesday.
The 17-year-old said it’s surreal to arrive at this point because disc golf is simply a hobby he picked up from his dad.
“My dad, when I was very young, would take me out in a stroller and he would play and so I would just be there on the course experiencing it,” Will Ferris said. “Then as I grew older, played more and more and more holes and it grew to the point where I’m going with him every time.”
Will’s skills were tested when he participated in his first tournament with his dad about two years ago.
“I didn’t do very well,” Ferris said. “I’ve always been a very competitive person coming from a soccer background, so it kind of sparked something within me.”
Ferris played in more tournaments and collected some wins, which led him to this week’s world championship, where he’ll compete against 144 people.
“There are international people coming in, so I’m very excited to meet people from other states, people from other countries,” Will Ferris said. “Just this experience is so exciting for me.”
While exciting, Ferris and his dad said this opportunity is still unbelievable.
“Like I always say, it’s amazing to see him like the same things I do and get better than me at them,” Tom Ferris said.
Beacuse of his age, Ferris will only get one shot at this tournament, and he wants to go out on top.
“I wanna be able to play on the fifth day,” Will Ferris said. “I want to make the cut for top 40 percent so I can say I’m an x, top x.”
