Focus at Four: Keeping four-legged family members safe during Independence Day

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – While the Fourth of July is a celebration for many, our four-legged friends might be in for a rough night.

Pets often go missing on Independence Day as the loud noises frighten them.

Katrina Ross with Aggieland Humane Society said that planning ahead for Thursday can help ease your pet’s anxiety.

“We’re going to get up about two hours earlier. That way we can go through our motions and end [our day] 2 hours before we would normally. So about 7:00 PM, I’m going to do my final potty walks and we’re going to be nice and tuckered out. That way, I don’t have to go out once the sun is down,” she said.

If your pet is very anxious, talking to your vet about Trazadone or a light sedative can help too, according to Ross.

“You could also give your pet a nice enrichment item, put on some calming music. Just really have a nice Zen time in your home,” she said.

If your pet does happen to run away or get out of your yard, Ross said there are things you can do to spread the word.

“That’s when I would immediately post to socials. Go on your neighborhood groups and post in the lost and found pages and then say, ‘Oh my gosh, here’s a picture.’ Take a picture right now. That way you see exactly what your pet looks like, and your neighbors can start to look as well,” she said.
