VFW Freedom Celebration honors service members on Independence Day

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The VFW Post 4692 beat the heat this 4th of July at their annual Freedom Celebration, while also honoring the servicemen and women that helped secure our freedom.

Spirits were high inside the VFW, with a corn hole tournament, cake walk and other activities kept guests of all ages entertained.

“My favorite part is I love fireworks, and I love being here, and I love getting prizes,” five-year-old Emilia said.

For VFW Post Commander Leo Riviera, it signifies more than just celebrating the 4th of July, it’s about honoring those who protect the freedom being celebrated.

“We always have to remember that our freedom wasn’t free, that people had to pay the ultimate price in order for us to attain that freedom,” he said.

Riviera served overseas in the Marine Corps, and sees events like this as a way to bring families together for a day of fun, especially when many service members are apart from their families for long periods of time.

“People can have fun with their families, but we remember that there’s people out there who sacrifice that time with their family so then we can do those things,” he added.

It’s a message even some of the youngest guests reflected on.

“We’re with people celebrating the day we became one country and we were free,” Emilio said.

The VFW is undergoing renovations in several areas of its building. Those are expected to be completed in August.
