Fans react to Jim Schlossnagle leaving Texas A&M University
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – If you’ve been on social media in the last 24 hours, you know fans have some strong emotions about this.
KBTX asked fans in Aggieland how they are feeling after the announcement that Jim Schlossnagle is leaving Texas A&M to become the University of Texas’ head baseball coach.
Outside of the legendary Aggie watering hole, the Dixie Chicken, KBTX spoke with two University of Texas fans. It is clear even Texas fans are surprised by the news that coach Jim Schlossnagle is leaving the Aggies right after a historic season.
Jason Waller is a University of Texas graduate and is visiting College Station for the 7 on 7 state tournament this weekend.
“It has put some gasoline on the fire of course, so you know it is going to be explosive,” said Waller. “It’s just kind of a shock I think to come in and recruit young men into your school and then all of a sudden, leave.”
Waller graduated from the University of Texas, but said the past 48 hours caused him to question Schloss’ character.
“I just think that the lack of commitment sometimes, is it the money, is it – you know, what was the driving force behind his decision? Was it already made before they qualified for the World Series? Who knows? Only he knows,” said Waller.
UT fan Todd Thoene also questioned the rushed decision.
“I think the process, the way it was done, the way it was done so quick, and not giving A&M baseball a chance to enjoy their season and stuff like that, I think it was wrong of him and of UT to do it the way they did it and how they did it,” said Thoene.
Cooper Dyess a Master’s student at Texas A&M, said he was in denial about how Schloss could do this.
“The fact that it’s UT makes it hurt even worse, it’s’ not just him going to another SEC school or him going to another program, this is definitely something that people are not going to forget. Any interactions with UT I think this is going to intensify,” said Dyce.
Dyess said the timing of Schloss’ exit just a day after the World Series loss intensified his disappointment.
”I was just really surprised with how soon it was, especially with how appreciative the baseball team has been with the Twelfth Man, even we showed out at Omaha, and then within the day the news breaking, it’s very surprising and disappointing a little bit,” said Dyess.
Dyess said despite both Schloss’ exit and the loss in the World Series, he’s proud to be an Aggie baseball fan and is looking forward to next year’s season.
Goodbull Ice House on Northgate even put up a sign reacting to Schloss’ exit.

All fans agreed this only heightens the tension between the two Texas schools, especially with the big rivalry football game returning this fall.
