Groups take to the streets of College Station for the 20th annual Juneteenth Freedom walk
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Dozens of people in College Station put on their walking shoes for the 20th annual Juneteenth Freedom Walk Tuesday.
The 2.2 mi walk has been a staple in the community, and organizers say this year was a bigger turnout than ever.
“I look at it from the standpoint that so many have made sacrifices for us regardless of what the weather was they still made a significant impact in our American culture,” said Lincoln center supervisor, Cheletia Johnson.
Tuesday morning the walk began at the Lincoln Recreation Center and ended at the George H.W. Bush Library and museum.
During the event, the diverse group of adults and children were escorted by CSPD, along with members of the community cheering them on.
“To see the children today talking to each other and interacting with each other and really recognizing the importance of what we’re doing that was great,” said George Bush presidential library director, Dawn Hammatt.
After the walk, everyone in attendance was treated to a special performance by Toni Simmons, and lunch.
