Marine One/4141 Locomotive Pavilion opens its doors to the public
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The newest addition to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum opened its doors to the public Thursday.
The Marine One/4141 Locomotive Pavilion houses two special relics from the late president’s life, now on display for visitors to see.
It features a retired Marine One helicopter and the custom-painted locomotive that led President Bush’s funeral procession into College Station.
“Everyone has been so excited about the pavilion. Everybody’s been chattering about it, so I am sure everybody’s really excited to come see it,” library and museum director Dawn Hammatt said.
Exhibits line the walls, diving into the history and significance of the centerpieces of the pavilion. With free admission, and a cafe sitting across from the locomotive, the new space is leaving an impression on its visitors.
“I think this is such an extraordinary addition to our community and a real blessing to have this here,” local artist and gallery owner Benjamin Knox said.
Knox created the artwork for the library and museum’s dedication in 2013, working closely with the late president on many artistic creations.
His artistry can be found in the library and museum, including his most recent piece, ‘The Ride Home.’ Now, seeing the pavilion fully completed holds an even deeper meaning.
“This was planned many many years ago, and to see it all come together and to be available for the public to enjoy, that is a true amazing thing,” he added.
It’s another piece of presidential history, preserved and protected.
The pavilion follows the same hours as the main building of the library and museum and is free to the public.
“We hope that you stopped by, and visit, and learn something new, and get a snack!” Hammatt said.
