With the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings during World War II coming up on Thursday, the Museum of the American G.I. is planning an event to commemorate it.
Hands-on History: Remembering D-Day 2024 will be held this Saturday at the museum from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Those in attendance will learn about what U.S. soldiers faced during D-Day while exploring uniforms, weapons and equipment used in the battle of Normandy. There will also be hands-on activities for kids.
Leisha Mullins, secretary & treasurer with the Museum of the American G.I. said that D-Day was the largest land invasion the U.S. has had and the start of the offensive in Normandy.
“It was a massive air, land and sea invasion,” Mullins said. “It was about a 24 hour time period so it started at midnight and went through. We think of D-Day as the beginning and end but it was just the start of that entire offensive.”
With the event the Museum will be able to go over D-Day day by day up to 84 days, Mullins said.
“History is best experienced so we have people coming in, so we have some outside groups that are going to come and talk about paratrooper, so if you want to know what a paratrooper wore or what it was like to jump out of a plane.”
The Museum will also have a ladder that allows people to view the insides of some of its tanks.
“This is probably the last large commemoration that we’ll have attendance of original World War II veterans that participated in D-Day,” Mullins said. “It’s really the last time we get to honor and celebrate this group while they’re alive but we can keep their memory alive or what they did alive by learning about it, experiencing it and just taking a pause to see what they did on that day.”
