Little Aggie Bookworms aims to help parents engage with their children’s reading

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Texas A&M University is looking to help parents engage with their child’s reading with a special event called “Little Aggie Bookworms.”

The event will be held on June 26 and on July 24 at the Clinic for Advanced Literacy Studies- Charlotte Sharp Children’s Center. Children must be three to four years old to participate. Only 10 parents will be able to get a spot with their child.

Ramona T. Pittman, Associate Professor and Director of the Clinic for Advanced Literacy Studies said some of the strategies parents will learn and use will be things that the child will see when they get into kindergarten.

“We know that if kids love to read they benefit because they become life-long readers and also it prepares them for school and the more kids read the more motivated they are and if they are able to read they gain motivation because they’re interested in reading,” Pittman said.

Graduate students will read a book to the group and then parents will do research-based activities with their children.

“Our hope is that each parent will walk away with the book that we used during the read-aloud and then some engagement activities they can use at home centered around that book,” Pittman
