Former ILTexas teacher charged with sexual assault of student

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A former teacher at the International Leadership of Texas in College Station remains behind bars in Brazos County charged with the sexual assault of a student, according to court documents obtained by KBTX.

College Station Police say Jose Adrian Hernandez Grimaldo is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old in a restroom and threatening to harm her if she told anyone.

The incident allegedly occurred last year on the ILTexas K-8 campus on Longmire Drive.

Information and documents obtained by KBTX also show school officials shared a different version of what happened to ILTexas families and allowed him to transfer to another campus even after a parent shared concerns about his behavior.

The Timeline

According to a probable cause statement from CSPD, the student alleging the sexual assault first made an outcry to a parent about Hernandez Grimaldo inappropriately touching her thigh, which led to an email in February 2023 to school officials by the parent expressing concerns about the inappropriate touching.

During a meeting with investigators on Oct. 17, 2023, the student then shared details of the alleged sexual assault. Police documents show the student said her 6th-grade Spanish teacher asked that she leave an after-school program to discuss one of her assignments in a hallway but then pulled her into a bathroom and sexually assaulted her on the floor. He is also accused of covering her mouth and telling her that he’d kill her if she told anyone, the report states.

The school was able to document that the student and teacher were, in fact, together for an after-school activity on Feb. 3, 2023, according to police.

Documented Concerns

According to the probable cause statement written by police, “The defendant was terminated from the school because he had two incidents of touching students after being told by the administration to stop. These incidents included separating two students and bruising one of the students in the process and allegations that he touched a student’s belly button and played with another student’s hair.”

Police say they spoke with several students who confirmed Hernandez Grimaldo did touch a student’s thigh in class, in addition to touching a female student’s belly button when she lifted her hand. He is also alleged to have touched two female students’ hair in a “way that made them feel uncomfortable.”

On Nov. 1, 2023, police obtained a statement from Hernandez Grimaldo in which he denied sexually assaulting the student and agreed to a polygraph examination. On Nov. 27, 2023, he conducted a DPS polygraph and failed the test, said police.

Employment History

International Leadership of Texas has confirmed Hernandez Grimaldo was hired on Aug. 1, 2022, at the K-8 campus in College Station.

The school says Hernandez Grimaldo filed a grievance against an undisclosed disciplinary action on May 15, 2023, and as part of the grievance, an appeal hearing was held on May 23, 2023. The next day, the school authorized Hernandez Grimaldo to be able to transfer from the ILTexas campus in College Station to another K-8 campus in Lancaster near Dallas.

ILTexas says it learned of Hernadez Grimaldo’s arrest last week and he was terminated from his job in Lancaster on Friday, May 24.

A spokesperson for the school said any questions about the arrest or investigation should be directed to the College Station Police Department.

The Principal’s Email

On the day of Hernandez Grimaldo’s termination, Principal Zachary Bolzan sent an email to College Station families that night notifying them of the arrest.

Several parents have expressed concern with Bolzan’s explanation that claimed the arrest had no connection to the College Station campus.

“At this time, we have no reason to believe there is any connection between the arrest and our students or campus, but we will be sure to communicate with you if that changes,” said Bolzan in his email to parents. “The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority and we are committed to doing everything in our power to ensure our campuses are a safe place for all. Due to the nature of the situation, we cannot give out more information, but we are happy to answer any questions that we can.”

KBTX reached out to Bolzan on Wednesday for comment but he did not reply to our email.

The Arrest

Hernandez Grimaldo, 46 resides in the Dallas suburb of Seagoville and was first booked into the Dallas County jail on Wednesday, May 22 with bond set at $200,000.

Online jail records show he was then moved to the Brazos County Detention Center on Wednesday, May 29, and remained there at the time of publication.

KBTX has sent additional questions to ILTexas, Principal Bolzan and College Station police Thursday morning and hopes to have updated information and answers tonight on News 3 at 6.
