Focus at Four: Huntsville State Park recovering from storm damage, plans to reopen

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Texas has been hit with storm after storm for the past month.

In the Brazos Valley, the flooding has done significant damage, including in Walker County.

Kody Waters, the Park Superintendent & State Park Police with Huntsville State Park, said that the rain has taken a huge toll on the buildings and trees because of the saturated ground, with 12 trees blocking their roadway at one point.

“The team here locally at our State Park and then several other teams from other state parks across our region came in and helped cut trees, and get those hazard trees down on the ground and out of the way so we could open back up on May 17th. We were planning on opening back up. But unfortunately again, we received another almost 6 inches of rain on May 16th and therefore we had to close again and push our opening date past Memorial Day,” he said.

Waters also said the 21-mile trail system will likely be closed in spots because of the saturation.

“As it stands, our hope is to open next week and when we open. We want our visitors to keep in mind we will be open for overnight camping and for day use, but there’s a lot of facilities that have been affected because of these storms,” he said.

Waters mentions that the team at the park has been resilient during all of this, continuing to help clean up and get back to normal.

“We’re working really hard and our team is just. Honestly, they’ve been knocked down a bunch of times and we just keep getting back up. Just bear with us, is what we’re asking and we’ll hope to get as much as we can as quick as we can,” he said.
