Police and Texas Rangers investigating in-custody death of man in Navasota
NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) – The Navasota Police Department and Texas Rangers are investigating the death of a man who was in police custody in the early hours of Tuesday, May 28.
According to a news release, Navasota officers responded to an apartment complex on Doris Street around 1:15 a.m. for a “physical altercation in progress.”
When officers arrived, they were told that a man went into an apartment without consent and assaulted one of the residents inside. Officers were told the man was forcefully removed from inside the apartment by other residents and then a physical altercation continued outside.
Another witness, who has spoken with investigators, tells KBTX she disputes the claim that the man forced entry into the apartment and said it appeared that the man instead was “jumped” by a group of people on the porch following an argument outside.
Police say the man left the scene before officers arrived, but he was located two blocks away in a field by a family member.
According to the news release, “Officers observed the male unable to stand on his own and mumbling. The subject resisted but was detained and medics were requested.”
Police say while detained, the man lost consciousness and CPR was started. Medics then arrived and rushed the man to the hospital in Navasota where he was pronounced deceased at 2:30 a.m.
The man’s name has not been shared publicly by authorities at this time.

KBTX has requested copies of body camera-worn videos of the officers who responded to the scene of the incident.
