Be Remarkable: Local couple volunteering time to build beds for kids
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – An organization that builds beds for families in the Brazos Valley is hosting a big fundraising event next month.
Like other non-profits, the group depends greatly on volunteers to make its mission successful.
That’s why Gary and Terry Sheeley are being celebrated for this week’s Be Remarkable award. The two have spent countless hours volunteering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace.
“I did not realize what demand there was until we actually started doing this, but there’s a big demand. There’s a lot of kids out there that do not have a bed in our community,” said Gary.
The beds they and other volunteers help build are for children aged 3 to 17, and they’ve put together close to 2000 to date.
Gary and Terry were among some of the first to make the local deliveries.
“You know, it’s hard for children to succeed in school and in their other activities if they don’t have a good night’s sleep,” said Gary.
Terry spends many hours helping families navigate the application process of the program, with the goal of making sure that no kid sleeps on floors and together they’ve put their heart into one of the fastest-growing charities in Aggieland.
“I just love it. I mean, I absolutely love the feedback I get from people from the applicants, and I can get hugs out of this, OK? And so what’s better than that,” asked Terry.
“Terry was wonderful. She is so sweet and kind on the phone and made sure I understood all the information. Her husband Gary and three other gentlemen came out and put the beds together with brand-new mattresses, pillows, and bedding,” said Kimberly Little, who nominated the couple for this week’s award.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is hosting a fundraiser and build event on June 22nd. More details can be found below and here.
