Beauty industry leaders share at-home self-care tips

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Throughout the month, KBTX has shared ways to prioritize mental health.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and experts advise taking time to enjoy activities that allow you to be still and de-stress.

One way is self-care. That’s why instructors and a student at the Finetta Barber & Beauty Academy joined BVTM Monday to share ideas.

The school’s founder Etta Whitley said self-care is important for overall health.

“Part of mental health is making sure you’re okay,” Whitley said. “Sometimes you have to steal away from everything and everybody and just go in your room and do a facial or do yourself a pedicure or even a manicure, go into the shower with your exfoliating gloves and just take care of you.”

Ideas can be found below.

Nail & Hand Care

Healthy nails are important for both men and women, according to FBBA student Cassandra Galizia.

To maintain your nails, Galizia recommends pushing back your cuticles, filing the nails, using a base coat polish, buffing the nails and using nail polish if wanted.

An optional idea is using paraffin wax after buffing the nails. This moisturizes the hands.

Foot Care

An easy way to care for your feet is using a pedicure bowl, according to FBBA lead instructor Shirilyn Dykes.

The bowl can be found online and in stores like Walmart.

Dykes recommends leaving your feet in the bowl for five to minutes after caring for the toenails.

After removing your feet from the bowl, Dykes suggests using a sugar scrub to remove dead skin.

Skincare & Makeup

For those wanting to do a light makeup look before going out, Whitley recommends taking care of your skin first with a moisturizer with SPF of at least 15.

FBBA instructor Jay Ruiz said that can be followed by using eyebrow gel, concealer and lip gloss.

At-Home Facial

An at-home facial is simpler than you may think, according to Whitley.

She uses a handheld steamer to open the pores. That can be followed by using a deep facial cleanser, a serum face mask and moisturizer.

The FBBA founder also recommends using exfoliating gloves in the shower to kill the epithelial tissue off your skin.
