Nurses Week: Meet two Baylor Scott & White nurses working to ‘make the difference’

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) -“Nurses make the difference.” That’s the theme for this year’s Nurses Week running from May 6 to 12.

Nurses work day in and day out to be there for people when they need it most.

“Nursing is such a rewarding experience,” Wayne Newman, a nurse at Baylor Scott & White, said. “It’s a rewarding job. I’m getting the chills just talking about it.”

Nurses work in fields all across healthcare with a wide variety of specialties. At Baylor Scott and White, Newman works in the endoscopy department while Jacolby Robinson is in the emergency department.

“Each day is a little bit different, each patient is a little bit different and that’s what I really love about the role,” Robinson said.

While they have different roles at the hospital, they each had healthcare professionals who touched the lives of their families and inspired them to pursue nursing.

“My father ended up having an injury so I spent a lot of time in the hospital,” Newman said. “It kind of just drove me to be one of those people for somebody else.”

“There was a very tragic family incident that I had and the care that my family member received, even though the outcome was not what I would have liked it to have been, the care received made a big difference,” Robinson said. “I hit the ground running and chose nursing.”

Now, they work each day to “make the difference.”

“Healthcare is the emotional, the mental, the spiritual,” Newman said. “It’s just fun to build those relationships with not only nurses but those patients. Obviously, no one is ever thrilled about getting a colonoscopy or an EGD so I think being able to build a quick relationship with a patient, make them feel comfortable before their procedure.”

“I believe I was placed on this earth to help somebody,” Robinson said. “If I could help just one person and change their life, I’ve done what I was supposed to do.”

If you are considering becoming a nurse, Robinson and Newman both said they highly encourage you to follow your passion.
