Counselor shares end-of-year, summer tips for students

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The countdown to summer break is on for many students.

Although, with things like end-of-year testing and final assignments, there are things students and parents can keep in mind to have a successful end to the year and plan for a productive summer.

That’s why Mary Woods, the director of guidance at Brazos Christian, joined BVTM Tuesday to share tips for elementary, intermediate, middle and high school-aged students.

Elementary Students

Rest, stay hydrated and eat nutritious foods heading into end-of-the-year testing.Plan for a fun and productive summer with activities including nature walks, visiting parks and reading.Practice math facts with resources like YouTube.

Intermediate & Middle School Students

Check in with teachers and/or counselors to get advice going into the next grade.Plan to spend time outside during the summer by visiting parks, participating in church programs and exploring new cultures and foods.For students transitioning to high school, plan to attend the high school’s open house to get a tour of the campus and ask questions about your schedule.

9th and 10th Grade Students

Start thinking about college or vocational school.Think about your goals and how you’re wired.Work on service hours.Seek advice and/or internships from those in careers you’re interested in.

11th and 12th Grade Students

Think about what you want to do after high school (college, vocational school, etc.).Think about how you’re wired and what you’re passionate about.Take the ACT and/or SAT.Talk to people in careers you’re interested in and ask for a part-time job or internship.Be kind to yourself.Have fun.
