‘All that jazz:’ Navasota High Theatre Company ending school year with legendary show
NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) – The Navasota High School Theatre Company is preparing to present one of Broadway’s longest-running shows.
Starting Thursday, it’ll kick off the teen version of “Chicago.”
“We still got the same characters, we got the murder, we got all the fun dance moves,” director Stephanie FitzSimon said. “We’ve taken out language or anything that would make it inappropriate for high schoolers.”
The show will take the audience back to 1920′s Chicago where they’ll find women who are committing huge crimes and getting away with them.
The characters are sensationalized and are made to seem like celebrities, according to Stephanie FitzSimon.
One of the leading ladies is Velma Kelly, who’s being played by McKenzie FitzSimon.
Kelly caught her husband in an affair with her sister and shot both of them. Even though she’s guilty, she plays it off as though she’s the victim.
“Her being in court is just like an entire show that we are going to fool the entire world and have the entire world feel guilted for this girl and have her feel innocent,” McKenzie FitzSimon said.
Lizeth Corona is taking on the role of Roxie Hart.
Hart, who’s having an affair with Fred Casey, is desperate to be famous and thinks Casey can bring her stardom. When he doesn’t keep his promise, she killed him.
“This is the first show where I have to get in the zone and really get into that mindset of hating the world,” Corona said.
Along with the well-known characters, the show is packed with familiar songs like “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango.”
The Navasota Diamonettes are also a part of the show.
“Chicago” starts Thursday and runs until Saturday at the Brosig Auditorium. It starts at 6 p.m. each night.
Tickets can be purchased at Navasota High School’s front desk and the auditorium before the shows.
“We wanna pack this house,” Stephanie FitzSimon said. “We want so much energy in this auditorium.”
