Focus at Four: Walker County Emergency Management gives update on flood aftermath
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – As we continue to monitor the weather and flooding conditions in the area, officials are assessing damage from the standing water.
Highway 30 in Walker and Grimes County is now back open, but some residents remain displaced.
Walker County emergency management coordinator Butch Davis joined First News at Four and said Walker County has had to do 10 additional water rescues Friday. Thursday, they had to do 50.
“We have some areas in Huntsville that flood real quick and the water will go back down, but that was kind of a historical flash flood for here in Walker County. We had to rescue people here in Huntsville proper and then people in the county, we had quite a few to get out,” he said.
Davis said the damage for some communities has been extensive.
“We’ve had a tremendous amount of damage down south in a subdivision around New Waverly. All the homes were inundated. There’s gonna be a lot of homes there that will be classified as destroyed,” he said.
Davis also mentioned that the root rot will be something to watch in the coming days and weeks.
“We kind of came out of a drought last year, and so when the soil gets saturated, the trees start falling. They’ll fall on the roadway, on highways, especially Farm to Market and county roads,” he said.
They are expected to begin assessing damage next week.
