Flooding shuts down roadways in Grimes County, creates dangers for drivers

GRIMES COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) – Brazos Valley roadways have been shut down due to high waters. But, that hasn’t been deterring everyone and residents watching it happen have a message to drivers.

Multiple spots along Highway 30 between Bryan and Huntsville had water covering the roadway, with crews shutting down the area Thursday afternoon. Jan Osterhaus lives right near the spot where drivers dared to cross all morning.

“We have a huge pond out there and a smaller one further in, and they have both met plus gone down the creek, over the bridge in two different places down there,” she said. “I don’t know that I’ve seen it this bad even back at the last hurricane.”

Eventually, crews closed the roadway. But residents showed up to check the rare flood waters rushing over Highway 30.

Taylor Roesler and Drew Wagner live nearby and say they’ve never seen anything like it.

“Most water I’ve seen around here ever, yeah we’ve lived here our whole life and this is probably the worst we’ve ever seen,” the men said. “It looked bad from the backyard but nothing like this. You couldn’t even see the fence on FM 244.”

FM 244 has its own dangers. Just miles from Anderson, a curve is covered by rushing water. Roesler and Wagner said those thinking of crossing need to come up with a different route.

“Turn around, go home, don’t go through it, don’t be that guy,” they said.

Highway 30 remains closed as of Thursday evening. There was no timeline given on either closure.
