May 4 Special Election: Navasota ISD Superintendent discusses bonds on the ballot

NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) – Voters zoned for Navasota ISD have a chance to sign off on two bonds in the May 4 election.

Proposition A is a $71 million bond package. Navasota ISD Superintendent Dr. Stu Musick says it would partly go towards renovation and remodels of existing campuses, including roofs and HVAC systems maintenance.

“The average age of our campuses throughout Navasota ISD is 48 years old, and so there’s a lot of upkeep and maintenance that has to go along with that,” said Musick.

If passed, it would also be used to address growth in the area. The money would go towards a new elementary school, new school buses, and land for future schools.

Proposition B is about a $3 million bond package. It would let the district move some money around, from Maintenance and Operations to Interest and Sinking, or debt servicing. In the process, they’d free up about half a million dollars for maintenance.

Musick says if passed, there would be no tax increase for residents in the area. However, he says the language on the ballot will not reflect this.

“The language on there says this is a property tax increase, and that’s because the law four years ago requires for any school bond election the ballot to say this is a property tax increase,” said Musik. “Even though it’s not a tax increase, even if your taxes would go down, it’s still required by law to say that.”
