Memorial baseball tournament honoring College Station 9-year-old returns
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A tournament honoring the memory of a local 9-year-old baseball player who passed away in 2022 after a battle with liver disease is coming back this year.
His parents, Laura and Brad Root are hosting the second annual Play For Easton baseball tournament over Mother’s Day weekend. This event raises money to help local kids play any sport they want even if their family doesn’t have the funds for them to participate or get equipment.
After the first tournament, they were able to help numerous local kids and wanted to expand their ability to support the local community. The tournament is open for players 9U to 12U to make teams and compete in the two-day event.
This year, Laura says additional partnerships will expand their ability to raise money at the event, beyond playing baseball.
“We have some new things that we’ve added this year. One of the things we’re excited about is we’ve partnered with Kendra Scott and they’re going to be doing a Kendrick Gives Back pop-up that’s 12 to 2 p.m. on Saturday of the tournament. Which is perfect for Mother’s Day for people can come out and shop and 20% of the proceeds from that pop-up will go back to our foundation,” she said.
The tournament and fundraiser will happen May 11-12 at Travis Fields in Bryan. Team sign-ups can be found here. The Roots are also looking for local sponsors for the event and volunteers. Information on how you can sign up will be posted on their social media.
