Jefferson Awards: Dr. Clifford Dorn continues to show support for law enforcement officers statewide

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Clifford Dorn’s dedication to bolstering the safety of law enforcement officers has not only captured the admiration of his community but has also garnered national recognition. From initiatives like “Backing the Badge” to spearheading “Operation Safe Shield,” Dorn has made it his mission to demonstrate appreciation for those who serve and protect.

Dr. Clifford Dorn, an alum of Texas A&M University, now runs a successful embryo transfer company, but landing on this year’s list of Jefferson Award recipients is due to his unwavering support for law enforcement.

The catalyst for Dorn’s advocacy was a series of incidents, including the shootings of two state troopers, prompting him to co-found and lead Operation Safe Shield, a nonprofit dedicated to funding bullet-resistant windshields for patrol vehicles. Initially launched in 2021, the organization has seen significant progress, with the cost of the technology dropping from $20,000 to $9,000, making it more accessible to law enforcement agencies across the region and the state. The co-founder of the organization and Vice President is Kristi Schiller, a 2023 Jefferson Award recipient.

“The idea is simple: protect those who protect us,” Dorn said. “In smaller towns, law enforcement officers are not just faces; they’re neighbors, friends. Ensuring their safety is the least we can do.”

But Dorn’s contributions extend beyond Operation Safe Shield. He annually hosts “Backing the Badge,” a gathering aimed at honoring first responders. The event, entirely funded by community members, provides an opportunity for officers to connect with the public and each other.

Dorn’s motivations for these programs run deep, influenced by both personal tragedy and profound gratitude.

“I had a son who was murdered here in Brazos County and the police department caught the guy the very next day. I mean, they worked on it and got it done immediately. I worked with the DA’s office there and we got it prosecuted and they stepped up and took care of us fast. And we said, well, if they can do that for us, then we need to say thank you to them,” he shared.

As Dorn’s efforts continue to gain momentum, his impact on law enforcement appreciation reverberates not just in Brazos Valley but across the nation. With each windshield installed and each luncheon served, he reinforces the vital bond between communities and those who dedicate their lives to keeping them safe.
