9-year-old BMX racer from China Spring to race for team USA in world championship: ‘I want to represent our country’
CHINA SPRING, Texas (KWTX) – Dominick Tremillo, a China Spring local, has been a natural on a bike ever since he learned to ride when he was just two years old.
He quickly found a passion for BMX racing, and at five years old he decided he wanted to start competing, telling his dad “sign me up, I wanna race.”
Now, at just 9 years old, Dominick’s a three-time state champion, a two-time regional champion, and the reigning champion for both.
And these are just a few of his accomplishments over the last four years.
“Naturally he’s a competitor, so we’re just trying to do our best to support him,” Dominick’s dad, Tre Tremillo, shared, “it’s always emotional seeing him out there, not just on the competitive side, but also just him working so hard to be that good.”
But despite all of this, there was a time when Dominick and his family thought he might never ride again after he was diagnosed with a heart murmur.
According to Tre, “the doctors told him he’s not going to be able to ride a bike again.”
For four months Dominick had to stop racing completely.
During that time, he visited many different doctors and was put through a lot of testing, which his dad says was very hard for Dominick.
“That was really discouraging for him because he would sit at home and have these stabbing pains and we’d have to take him to the doctor. And then you’re afraid to let him get on the bike because you don’t know if the bike’s causing that,” Tre said.
But after just a few months the treatments began working and Dominick got back on his bike more determined than ever.
“Whenever I was healing from it I was like yay! Very excited that I could race again,” Dominick shared.
Just a few years later, he’s now getting ready to compete in the 2024 BMX racing world championship this May in South Carolina, after being selected for team USA.
Dominick expressed that he “was very honored that they picked me and I want to represent our country.”
And he’s just getting started, saying “I’d wanna become like a pro in BMX racing and just work really hard, as hard as I possibly can.”
