Inmate death investigation launched at Brazos County Detention Center

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office has shared with the public that it is investigating the death of an inmate who was in custody on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old inmate who was not named was arrested at approximately 5 p.m. by deputies on multiple warrants and was booked into the Brazos County Detention Center at approximately 05:10 pm.

The sheriff’s office says at approximately 11:00 pm the man experienced a medical emergency at the jail and was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan.

The individual passed away in the hospital at 11:47 p.m.

The Texas Rangers and Justice of the Peace were notified, and an autopsy is pending.

“Our condolences are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time. A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this passing is underway. Initial findings indicate he ingested an unknown substance. The Texas Rangers will be conducting an independent investigation, as is standard for all in-custody deaths,” said Deputy Christopher Searles.

The Texas Jail Commission has also been notified as required.

A Custodial Death Report will be forwarded to the Texas Attorney General upon completion of the investigation.
