Texas A&M students heading into boxing ring for great cause
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Texas A&M’s Reed Arena will soon become a boxing ring.
The inaugural Farmers Fight Night is happening Thursday at 6 p.m. It’s a family-friendly event involving Texas A&M students. For many, it’s their first time participating in an event like this.
Chase Johnson is the event’s student coordinator and the president of the Farmers Fight Night organization. He said the boxers have been practicing since the fall 2023 semester.
“They go to BCS Boxing at least three to four times a week getting that training in, working on form, their sparring technique, getting the calisthenics in, all of that good stuff,” Johnson said.
Jake Young will be in the ring Thursday and said the process has been a balancing act. He’s studying aerospace engineering and has a job.
“It’s a ton of sacrifice,” Young said.
He said the hardest part of preparing has been juggling the nerves leading up to Thursday.
“This is surreal,” Young said. “I’m going to get in Reed Arena in front of 1,000 people and try to put on a good show.”
Organization advisor Steven Cheatham said each student’s hard work and commitment to the event will be evident.
“When we get out there on Thursday, you’re going to see some really great fights,” Cheatham said.
Along with the fun the event will bring, it’ll serve as a fundraiser for the United Way of the Brazos Valley.
“We’re really excited about that,” Peggi Ondrasek said. “The students have worked so hard, and we’re so proud of them for everything they’ve done.”
Ondrasek is the President and CEO of the United Way of the Brazos Valley and said the proceeds will go towards supporting its 28 partner agencies.
“The past few years have been so tough economically on so many people, so we’re seeing the needs rise,” Ondrasek said.
