Leaders working to improve safety, eliminate fatalities on Brazos County roadways

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Community leaders are working to create a comprehensive safety action plan with a goal of eliminating fatalities on our roadways.

The Bryan College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization is targeting all modes of transportation in their plan, and they are relying on community input to submit recommendations to county leaders.

The group hosted a community event Tuesday night at the Brazos Center. MPO Executive Director, Dan Rudge, said this is a vital part of the study.

“We’ve had a map up on a website for people to put pins on the map and say this is where we think we have a safety problem and they tell us what it is. I think we’ve had over 1,200 people respond to that survey already,” Rudge said.

Current plans show the group is targeting areas of Texas Ave South of Harvey Road and areas of West Villa Maria. This is to improve safety for those on the roadways and beside them.

“The transportation statistics don’t point out locations where we haven’t had an accident or a crash or something, but we know that the general public out there knows where those locations are and it’s just a matter of time before something happens. And so that’s what we’re hoping to get out of a lot of the comments is Fix these areas before they become a concern,” Rudge said.

A group of Texas A&M students attended the meeting and said the event helped them with their degrees and it was heartwarming to see community leaders working to improve conditions for bikers and pedestrians.

“It’s reassuring to know they know these different intersections are a problem and they’re taking steps to like to address it and listening to comments and soliciting comments from people so that was reassuring,” Diego Lopez, Class of 2024, said.

Community input can be submitted here for only a few more weeks. The study will be completed in September.
