Franklin High School student commits to Coast Guard Academy
FRANKLIN, Texas (KBTX) – A Franklin High School senior is continuing her education at the prestigious United States Coast Guard Academy after revealing her decision at her signing ceremony Tuesday.
Sarah Haisler knew that she wanted to pursue a career in the military after attending a summer program organized by the Coast Guard.
Her ultimate goal is to become a helicopter pilot.
“Protecting our country and saving people like those people did last night in the Coast Guard, you know, it’s a great feeling and I’m really excited to be able to serve my country like that,” she said.
Thousands of students across the country compete for less than 300 spots in the academy, and students must be endorsed by a member of Congress to be considered. Rep. Pete Sessions nominated Sarah for this prestigious appointment after a lengthy vetting process.
”I have to have my seal of approval on it for myself, but also for people to have their respect. This community knows her best and I listened to many people. They said, ‘Sarah’s the right one.’” he said.
Congressman Sessions said endorsing her was an easy decision because of her academic record and leadership in the community.
“I believe she has the character not only to know herself but to be a leader and when you’re a leader among your peers and in the community you come from, people want good things for you,” he said.
Sarah also considered offers from West Point and Texas A&M University.
