‘Egg-flation:’ why egg prices are on the rise ahead of the Easter season

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – As we enter the Easter season, you might notice an essential item at the grocery store is more expensive.

The price of eggs has risen nearly $.50 from the end of 2023, bringing the average cost for a dozen eggs to around $3.

Experts say several factors are driving the price up.

Overall egg supply is limited due to a 2022 bird flu outbreak. The CDC reported over 80 million birds were affected.

However, it’s not just a lower supply driving up prices, there’s also now a greater demand.

Easter is just around the corner, and reports show it’s the second-highest demand period for eggs due to the many egg-related traditions of the holiday.

Whether you’re dyeing eggs or cooking them, a professor in the Department of Poultry Science at Texas A&M University said the price should return to normal shortly after.

”All of them will probably start to go down again in a couple weeks as long as we don’t get any bad outbreaks of disease or something like that,” Gregory Archer, an associate professor, said.

Archer said until that price drop happens, bigger eggs might come with a smaller price tag.

“The most expensive eggs probably right now are actually the medium size ones, and that’s generally because those are the best ones to dye eggs with,” Archer said. “So the bigger eggs are actually a little cheaper right now, relatively.”

The price of eggs now is still below its peak of nearly $5 a dozen from last January.
