Kyle Field poised to host more non-Aggie Football events
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – For the first time the iconic Kyle Field will host a concert featuring an iconic performer. On Tuesday it was announced George Strait will perform at the home of the Texas A&M; Football Team on June 15.
The King of Country played in front of more than 104,000 people during a 2014 performance at AT&T; Stadium in Arlington.
The record for the largest crowd to attend a ticketed concert in the United States was set in 1977 when 107,019 people attended a Grateful Dead show in New Jersey, according to Billboard Magazine. Texas A&M; said more than 107,000 tickets will be available for the Strait concert.
Large-scale events are nothing new to the folks at Kyle Field. Texas A&M; routinely draws crowds of more than 100,000 for football games.
“If you think about it, this is technically kind of like an eighth or ninth game of a season,” Texas A&M; Assistant Athletic Director of Special Events Kindra Fry said. “So lots of differences and nuances that come with a concert that are different from the game but, at the same time, we’ve employed and talked with all of those people.”
One week before the George Strait concert, Kyle Field will host an international friendly soccer match between Mexico and Brazil.
“This is going to be a really fun two weeks in the life of Kyle Field because these events are back-to-back, but I think we’re all ready,” Fry said.
Fry said she is working to bring more non-football events to Kyle Field. With the announcement of the concert and the soccer match, she said it’s going open the eyes of promoters looking to bring events to the stadium.
“There’s nowhere else like it and I think that’s really the allure of all of these events wanting to come here,” Fry said. “And I think it was just a matter of time before we get events, larger events other than Aggie football in the stadium for people to really start realizing there’s so much more that we could do with this place.”
