RSVP organization honors local volunteers for their work

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Southeast Texas is among America’s largest volunteer networks for people aged 55 and over who are tackling tough issues in their communities.

Last week, the organization hosted a luncheon to honor and recognize longtime members and its Volunteer of the Year: Teresa Cook of Oakwood.

Teresa, after retiring, moved from Conroe to Oakwood bringing experience in a management position in a major grocery market. After being introduced, she was voted to join the Oakwood Food Pantry Board of Directors and took on the responsibility of ordering the food for the pantry. Being the busy bee worker, she eventually took over the school backpack program and she supervises the volunteers in restocking the shelves of the pantry. She frequents the pantry checking on temperatures for the freezers and coolers. With all those duties, Teresa goes to purchase the bread and any other goods that are needed for the pantry; shopping for the best bargains.

“Any pantry would be delighted to have a volunteer like Teresa. Oakwood is proud to have her; she is an asset to the Oakwood Community Food Pantry and an outstanding volunteer,” said Curt Sterner, Assistant Director of RSVP of Southeast Texas.

5 and 10-year volunteers were also recognized at the event held at the Hilton Hotel in College Station.

15-year service members recognized include Iva and John Baugh of Brazos County, Gorden Brien of Robertson County, and Patsy Harper and Yvonne Leago of Madison County.

News 3′s Rusty Surette served as emcee of the event.
