Navasota High School Theatre Company competing in one-act contest
NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) – The Navasota High School Theatre Company hit the road Thursday to compete in the UIL One-Act Play contest at Royal High School in Brookshire.
The company presented the “Red Velvet Cake War.”
It’s a comedy about a dysfunctional southern family wanting to cancel their family reunion to not disgrace a relative going through a bad divorce. After it resumes, an aunt and the cousin getting divorced go head-to-head to see who can make the best red velvet cake.
“They get a quilt and the house on it, and the stakes get pretty high and all of this chaos ensues, and it’s pretty funny,” Stephanie FitzSimon said.
FitzSimon, the show’s director and designer, said the play was chosen during the summer, and the company has been preparing in class and after school since August.
“That’s just the rehearsal process,” FitzSimon said. “There’s also buying props, set, costumes, research, all kinds of things that go into the show.”
The company typically performs more dramatic pieces but the “Red Velvet Cake War” was the perfect fit, according to FitzSimon.
“All of these characters that they’re playing are almost themselves but 20 to 30 years in the future, and it just really fit,” FitzSimon said.
The company will be competing against six other schools including Needville High School, Bellville High School, El Campo High School, Wharton High School, Sealy High School and Royal High School.
Each will have seven minutes to build their set and 40 minutes to perform.
If Navasota High School makes the top three, they’ll advance to the bi-district round. That’ll be at the end of March at Bay City High School.
“We would love to just keep going and telling our story for as long as we can,” FitzSimon said.
