Black business spotlight: Beautimous Me Salon

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Black History Month highlights the contributions and successes of the Black community.

Throughout the Brazos Valley, several Black entrepreneurs are working to carve out their own lane and create change in a variety of industries.

One is Desiree Lewis, the owner of the Beautimous Me Salon in downtown Bryan.

“The name came about in 2011 when I decided to do a YouTube channel,” Lewis said. “I wanted to express a little bit more about myself and put myself out there as an up-and-coming hairstylist and then when I noticed that I wasn’t getting the views that I wanted or anything like that I decided to keep the name because I would later on, in the future use it.”

After years of doing hair in her home and working for others, she opened her salon in 2017 in College Station. It expanded to downtown Bryan in 2023.

“We have a huge service menu where we provide services as far as women and men haircuts, texture treatments, extensions, lashes, teeth whitening, tooth gems, I mean, the list goes on and on,” Lewis said.

Along with a diverse service menu, a diverse team has always been a priority for Lewis.

“You never know if that client that has the same hair texture, has the same style walk in that door, and she’s expecting somebody to look like her, so I tell my girls to come in as you are but, of course, look polished because you never know who may have that hair texture,” Lewis said.

The entrepreneur said this has helped her create a welcoming salon atmosphere where stylists can build meaningful relationships with their clients.

“That client is no longer a client anymore,” Lewis said. “That client is like the grandma you never had, the sister that you don’t have, the brother that don’t listen, the uncle, the grandpa.”

Lewis takes pride in the business and advises aspiring entrepreneurs to be unafraid to set yourself apart.

“Find out who you are as a person and what you have to offer not only to yourself but to the universe and just go for it,” Lewis said. “The sky is the limit.”

A lot is on the horizon for Lewis including opening another salon and expanding her product line, Curly Crowns Beauty.

The Beautimous Me Salon is located at 212 North Bryan Avenue in suite 103 in downtown Bryan.
