Rejoice, raise your voice to ‘Sister Act’ at The Theatre Company of Bryan/College Station
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Theatre Company of Bryan/College Station will kick off its 35th season Friday with a classic.
It’s presenting “Sister Act,” which will run for three weekends.
The musical is similar to the original “Sister Act” movie that starred EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg.
Disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder and is placed under protective custody at a convent.
While learning to adjust to her new life as a nun, Deloris, who’s being played by Tyler Lewis, must learn to embrace her sisters and Mother Superior’s rules.
Maleah Miller is playing Mother Superior and said Deloris shakes up the convent and tests her leadership.
“It’s a little bit of will Mother Superior win out or will Deloris or will they both change each other,” Miller said.
Throughout Deloris’ time in the convent, she learns to use her strengths to transform the convent’s choir. Catherine Tolleson, who’s playing Sister Mary Patrick, said that ultimately changes the overall sisterly bond.
“Obviously, already being in the convent together, there’s a lot of bonding but, Deloris, like I said earlier, shines this light on this new level of bonding that we can have through the joy of music,” Tolleson said.
Like her sisters, Deloris transforms during the journey.
“Deloris was all about herself and wanting to be a performer and then she finds this sisterhood and it’s like she realizes that there’s more to life than just being self-centered and all about the show,” Lewis said.
Adrienne Dobson is the show’s director and said it will be packed with great music and choreography.
“It is absolute magic,” Dobson said.
“Sister Act” wasn’t Dobson’s first option to start season 35 with but said she can’t imagine a better show now.
“We didn’t get the show that I wanted, but it was some of the board members that said ‘remember this one that we’ve talked about,’ and I said, ‘you know what, you’re right,’” Dobson said. “It’s the time. It was the song “Raise Your Voice” and then that became our whole season theme.”
