Meet the Candidate: Stan Gerdes – Texas House District 17

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Early voting is next week and one race voters will see on their ballot is Texas House District 17.

This week on News 3 at Six, we are getting to know the candidates who want to represent District 17 in Austin, which includes Bastrop, Burleson, Caldwell, Lee, and Milam counties.

Incumbent Stan Gerdes is looking to keep his seat. His opponent is Tom Glass.

Gerdes joined News 3 at Six Monday to discuss why he should keep his seat.

“We work with the folks all across this district on our legislation that’s where our legislation came from and we wanted to make a meaningful impact for HD 17,” Gerdes said. “We look forward to the opportunity to continue to do that. Look at my track record. Look at what we’ve done and I’m very, very excited for what the future holds for House District 17.”

Last Thursday Gerdes was part of the delegation in Eagle Pass led by Gov. Greg Abbott. When asked about what he saw at the border he said Texans have had enough.

“When we have a federal government that doesn’t stand up for the folks who live here, to do their duty to not only protect Texas’ border but our country, that’s a failure. And now Folks don’t feel safe. We don’t know what’s coming across that border,” Gerdes said.

As far as public schools and school vouchers Gerdes said House Bill 1 had a lot of positives for both public and private schools.

“Our public schools are the backbones of our community, especially in the rural areas that I represent, but parental choice is important as well,” Gerdes. “I was supportive of HB 1. We will see where this road goes from here. We got some work to do, but the main thing we need to do is take care of our educators.”
