Meet the Candidate: Paul Dyson – Texas House District 14
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Early voting is now less than two weeks away.
One race some Brazos Valley voters will see on their ballot is Texas House District 14. This week on News 3 at Six, we are getting to know the candidates who want to represent District 14 in Austin, which includes the northwestern part of Brazos County.
John Raney currently holds the District 14 chair. In August, he announced he would not seek reelection in 2024. Two Republicans are running in hopes of filling his seat: Paul Dyson and Rick Davis.
Dyson joined News 3 at Six Friday to discuss why he believes he should take the seat.
“I am a hard worker. I am from here. I know this district quite well. I was raised here. I know the values that we value here in HD 14,” Dyson said. “My efforts to the campaign, I am trying to show and trying to earn that support from every voter out there knocking on doors showing I am going to work hard for you not just while I am campaigning but while I’m up there in Austin.”
When it comes to school vouchers, Dyson says he’s for public schools, but also thinks parents deserve a choice.
“I think that what I am seeing is, a comprehensive plan is where we are going to be. We need to make sure our public schools stay strong, we need to make sure they have the funding they need. We also need to make sure that local control is returned to them, and at the same time, we need to recognize that there are parents that want more parental choice options. So parental choice is another option we need to pursue. I think looking at a comprehensive plan that balances both of those interests is the right way to go,” Dyson said.
Dyson, who is endorsed by Governor Greg Abbott, says he supports what the Governor is doing at the border.
“I think the Governor is doing a great job. I think he is the reason why we now have a national focus and we actually have people from the other side of the aisle that it is a crisis down at the border and I am proud to have his endorsement.”
