Bryan ISD to host The Next Step for families moving into intermediate school

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Bryan ISD is looking to make the transition from elementary to intermediate school easier for students and parents with a new program.

The Next Step is taking place on Feb. 20 at Sadberry Intermediate School. It’s designed to be a continuation of the work parents and students are doing in another district offering.

Students at Anson Jones Elementary School have the chance to take part in Read by 3rd, a program designed to boost literacy and encourage parents to be involved in their child’s education.

“We want to equip our parents with the skills that they need to help their child be a lifelong learner, be a successful citizen,” Anson Jones Elementary principal Dr. Alma Velez said.

Read by 3rd was brought back to the school last year when Dr. Velez took over as principal. The program was initially paused during the pandemic.

Dr. Velez said the positive changes can be seen both in and out of the classroom.

“It’s also reinforcing that academic language, the conversations, and the learning that’s happened at school to happen at home as well,” she added.

But parent involvement in their child’s education typically drops off once their child enters intermediate or middle school, she said. The Next Step is designed to fill that gap.

“We don’t want the kids to get lost. We want the parents to continue to shepherd the kids and work with the teachers,” Read by 3rd founder Daniel Hernandez said.

According to Hernandez, The Next Step will give Bryan ISD families a chance to learn more about the opportunities intermediate school brings, while giving families the tools to help their child succeed in the next level of education.

“Once the parents can begin to see what opportunities exist, that is powerful,” Hernandez said.
