Ukrainian Club at Texas A&M to host event Saturday, highlighting colorful history
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – An art exhibit on the Texas A&M campus Friday was used to preview an event happening this weekend.
Saturday, the Ukrainian Club at Texas A&M is hosting a fashion show and art exhibit on campus. This event is free for people to attend and get a look at authentic Ukrainian outfits from a private collection plus photographs.
The project, ‘Ukrainian Homestead’, will present a collection of ethnic demonstrations to educate and show off the beauty of traditions. Sofia Griffin, a member of the club, said discussions surrounding the region in the late 19th and 20th centuries are something everyone should see.
“Our culture is very old and vibrant. we have a lot to show a lot to say and I would love for everyone to see all of our beautiful traditions, century-old celebrations and how we all dress,” Griffin said.
Olenka Bravo, the author of the homestead project, and Natalka Sturgill, a Private Collector, are co-organizers of the event.
They said as the war in Ukraine continues and images of death and destruction play, people need to know about the beautiful and vibrant history that exists.
“At the beginning of the war, Russian President Putin said that Ukraine had never existed. These pieces are 150-plus years old including the homestead. Some of the homesteads are 17th century so this is our proof that Ukraine has existed for a long, long time. That what he said is not true,” Bravo said.
The event is happening at 5:00 p.m. at the Department of Plant Pathology & Microbiology building, located at 496 Olsen Boulevard, room 106.
