Focus at Four: Texas A&M professor researching cancer-killing technology
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Jackhammers are not the first, and probably not the second, thing you think of when you imagine cancer research.
But tiny versions of this machine might just be the answer scientists are looking for to help with the fight against cancer.
Professor Jorge Seminario, from the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M and the co-author of a study on the devices, joined First News at Four to discuss the innovation.
Seminario says the so-called molecular jackhammers are designed to be able to shatter the cancer cell itself.
“They are able to actually disturb. To destroy, like the name says, by hammering the surface of a cell,” he says.
The research study has only been done in vitro, and on mice.
Seminario said the study is likely to move on to human trials, potentially, in the next five or so years.
