New Year resolutions: Read more in ‘24

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – If you’re looking to read more individually or as a family in 2024, multiple resources can help.

One is the Bryan-College Station Public Library System.

January is Book Blitz Month, which encourages the community to read something new.

“Come in, get some recommendations from staff about the type of books that you may be interested in,” Bea Saba, the library system director, said. “We have book displays galore, series, all types of books, so it’s really important to encourage people in general to read more.”

She said the keys to reading more are removing distractions and setting a time to read. If your spare time is limited, Saba encourages reading whenever you can.

“The goal is not to read a book whole just like that,” Saba said. “You can take a whole month, two months, three months as much as you can consume.”

Resources like audiobooks, the system’s storytime events and book clubs can also help you to read more.

For those who haven’t found a favorite book, author or genre, Saba recommends taking your time to discover what works best for you.

“Come in and browse our collection and see what kinds of books that you may like just by looking at the cover or reading a little bit of the back cover,” Saba said.

Some popular books she recommends for adults are “The Secret to Happiness” by Suzanne Woods Fisher, “Upside Down” by Danielle Steel and “The Purest Bond: Understanding the Human–Canine Connection” by Jen Golbeck and Stacey Colino.

For kids, Saba suggests “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle and “Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band” by Kwame Alexander.
