Multiple changes along Wellborn Road

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The City of College Station and Union Pacific Railroad made some major changes along Wellborn Road.

The City of College Station says this included a new rail crossing and traffic signal at Deacon Drive along Wellborn Road.

Susan Monnat, Senior Project Manager for the City of College Station Capitol Projects, says as the rail crossing at Deacon Drive is opening, the Cain Road rail crossing is permanently closing.

“We’ve been working with TxDOT, we’ve been working with Union Pacific, so it’s a multi-jurisdictional project. So everyone has come together at this point to make this work, and we’re very excited to get this open and get this project completed,” said Monnat.

The city says they are working with the railroad, so road work at Rock Prairie Road is also taking place to get the traffic signals lined up with the railroad crossing.

At Rock Prairie Road and Wellborn Road, crews also removed old traffic signal poles.

Project Manager Raquel Gonzales says this construction is part of the Rock Prairie Road West project that started in November 2021 to widen Rock Prairie Road.

“There will be just the new poles, and everything will be in working order by the end of today,” said Gonzales.

Gonzales says the full project will be finished in the next couple of months as more work, including adding sidewalks, occurs.

Union Pacific Railroad said, “Union Pacific is currently testing the equipment and the traffic signal at the new Deacon Street railroad crossing. We anticipate the new crossing will open to traffic later today. As part of our agreement with the City of College Station, we asked that an adjacent railroad crossing be closed to accommodate the opening of a new crossing. Under the agreement, the Cain Street crossing will be permanently closed, as it is no longer needed. Union Pacific wants to extend our gratitude for the City of College Station on their hard work, and cooperation in bringing this project to fruition.”
